Technical Mentoring by Alumni for the Fourth Year Students
Posted on 14 Sep 2024

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering organized a technical mentoring session for fourth-year CSE students on September 14, 2024. The session was led by Er. S. Abishek, a 2016 alumnus and Senior Software Engineer at Turing, USA. During the session, Er. Abishek offered valuable guidance on career preparation and hiring processes. He emphasized that the first filter for job selection is typically based on CGPA, followed by a group discussion, where communication and teamwork are assessed. The third filter involves technical evaluations, including written MCQs and aptitude tests. The final stage, a face-to-face interview, focuses on communication and presentation skills. He highlighted the increasing demand for Data Structure knowledge in top companies, recommending platforms like LeetCode and HackerRank for preparation. He discussed the different job types available—Full-Time Employment (FTE), Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), and contract-based jobs. Abishek stressed the importance of maintaining a GitHub account to showcase projects, particularly in areas like DSA, dynamic programming, and recursion. He noted that companies like Google and Zoho, which develop their own products, often have up to 10 rounds of interviews for freshers, including one medium and one hard technical round of about 30 minutes each. Abishek also advised students to identify their strengths and weaknesses in various concepts and to focus on practicing. He explained that DSA is critical for Tier 1 companies and that interviews are an opportunity to showcase achievements and present oneself confidently. He also touched on the importance of understanding libraries and frameworks in development and urged students to pay attention to platforms like Stack Overflow, which are highly regarded in developer surveys. Dr. G. Aravind Swaminathan expressed his gratitude to the resource person, and the session was organized by Dr. G. Aravind Swaminathan and coordinated by Dr. E. Manohar.
