A.Pratheep Addrin., Application Engineer., SIMTEK., Chennai. delivered the guest lecture on Skills Beyond the Curriculum: Essential Soft Skills for Mechanical Engineers. The speaker commenced the Mechanical engineers need more than just technical expertise to thrive in their roles. Essential soft skills include effective communication, both verbal and written, to ensure clear and concise exchange of ideas and documentation. Teamwork and collaboration are crucial, as engineers often work within multidisciplinary teams and must navigate various perspectives and conflicts. Problem-solving and critical thinking are also vital, allowing engineers to tackle challenges creatively and analyze problems from different angles.

Project management skills, such as time management and budgeting, help in steering projects towards success. Adaptability and flexibility are important in keeping pace with evolving technologies and methodologies, while strong interpersonal skills, including emotional intelligence and empathy, foster better relationships and enhance teamwork. These soft skills complement technical abilities and significantly contribute to a mechanical engineer's effectiveness and career advancement.
